NBA president aurges FG to improve security

FOLLOWING the kidnap of their colleague, Mr. Okey Wali (SAN), the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN) has called on the Federal Government to put measures in place to end the increasing rate of insecurity in the country. Alegeh made this call on Tuesday when he led a delegation of senior lawyers on a solidarity visit to the family of the immediate past president of NBA at their resident in Rumualuogu in Obio/ Akpor Local Government Area. It will be recalled that Wali was kidnapped on Saturday by unknown gunmen on his way to visit his elder brother. Speaking with newsmen after praying for the immediate release of the former NBA president, Alegeh also expressed the need for the government to provide for the welfare of the people. He stated that the persistent incidents of kidnapping was a sign that the government was failing in its responsibility to provide security for the people. According to him, “We have always said that the principal function of the government is to provide for the welfare of the people. That is the constitutional role of government. I call on government again and again that there is an absolutely urgent need to step up security across the country. “If we are facing the situations where kidnappings still persist, it shows that it is a failing on the part of government and we have called on government also to please, step up their act, take more proactive steps at addressing the security situation in the country. Security, like I said goes hand in hand with the welfare of the people, security of the people. He appealed to those holding the former NBA boss hostage to release him on compassionate grounds, adding that Wali’s health condition does not require any ‘atrocious’ condition. Alegeh pointed out that Wali had served the country and had fought for the defenceless, even as he urged security operatives to do whatever they could to ensure the immediate release of the ex-NBA boss. He said he was in Rivers State to show that the bar was in pains and would stand by members of his (Wali) family. “I have come to the family of our 26th president, Emmanuel Okey Wali, along with chairmen of the branches of Rivers State and some leaders of the bar to show solidarity with the family and show that the bar is in pains as they are in pains and that we will stand by them at all times. “We are here to also use this opportunity to appeal to anybody who is involved in the abduction of Mr. Wali to please, in God’s name, consider releasing him on compassionate grounds because he has served the country very well. He has always fought for the defenceless. “Most importantly, he does not possess of the health that would enable him to survive atrocious conditions. So, we appeal passionately for his safe and immediate release. That is why we have come here today,” he stressed. On why the death sentence option by some states for kidnappers has not reduced the crime in the country,” Alegeh said, “Punishment may be a deterrent criminal activities, but it will not totally stop criminal activities. So, the function of government is to provide security first and foremost and where there is a breach, then the law will apply. “So, I do not see how you promulgate laws and the laws themselves will be a substitute to the function of government to provide security. No matter how draconian the law may be, government still has a responsibility to provide security.” He, however, expressed the need for the country to have a well-equipped police force and the resources to police the country. “The most important thing as we always say is to have a proper police force that is well equipped and that is grounded with the people and I believe that we have the resources to police the country. It is whether we have the will power that is doubt, but certainly, we have the resources to police the country,” he added.

we've avoided Kashamu after Obasanjo's letter, associates tell court.

Two associates of the Chairman of Mobilisation and Organisation Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, South-West, Prince Buruji Kashamu, have told a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, that they have been avoiding him after former President Olusegun Obasanjo, portrayed him as a wanted criminal in the media. The two men are the plaintiff’s witnesses in the N20.1bn libel suit instituted by Kashamu against Obasanjo in February 2014. They said they read about the criminal allegation as contained in a letter written by Obasanjo to President Goodluck Jonathan and published in both the print and electronic media of December 12, 2013. Kashamu had in his suit alleged that the words used by Obasanjo to describe him in the said letter portrayed him “as a criminal wanted for drugs related offences in the United States of America and the United Kingdom”. His two witnesses, Alhaji Haruna Rasheed and Mr. Omotayo, Alade-Fawole, who is also a lawyer called to the bar in 2008, adopted their statements on oath as their evidence in the case before Justice Valentine Ashi on Tuesday. They were led by the plaintiff’s counsel, Mr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), to adopt their statements on oath, and during cross-examination by Obasanjo’s lawyer, Mr. Gboyega Oyewole, they denied knowledge of existence of any drug-related charges against Kahsamu in the US. While Rasheed, stated in his statement that he halted the over 10 years friendship and business relationship with Kasahamu after the letter was published and same was not retracted by Obasanjo, Alade-Fawole, said he had ceased to be Kasahmu’s protocol officer, for the same reason. Alade-Fawole, added that he used to carry out “corporate legal  services for” Kashamu, whom he said he got to know about four years ago through a friend, who was his (Kashamu’s) nephew. Part of his statement on oath reads, “That due to the nature of my closeness to the plaintiff as his protocol, he became an inspiration to me and a role model. “That since I read the aforesaid publication I have avoided serving him in all capacity to avoid being seen with him. “That my refusal to serve him after the said publication is due to the fact that I have not seen or read any retraction by the defendant.” On his part, Rasheed, said before the publication, he was the one carrying out “bulk printing services for the plaintiff’s several companies over the years”. He stated in part, “That my refusal to associate with him after the said publication is due to the fact that I have not seen or read any retraction by the defendant. “That the plaintiff portrayed as criminal has tarnished my perception of him.” Oyewole during cross examination, asked the witnesses if they were aware that Kashamu was arrested for drug-related crimes in 1998, detained for five years, and still being wanted for the crime in the United States. “Are you also aware that the plaintiff has attempted to quash his indictment for the crimes in the US to no avail?” The lawyer asked the witnesses during their turns in the witness box. They both responded negative to the questions. The matter was adjourned till November 17 for the plaintiff to call his last witness and Obasanjo, to invite his only witness.

Vatican ask Catholic Church to welcome gays

In a dramatic shift in tone, Catholic bishops released a document Monday saying that homosexuals had “gifts and qualities to offer” and asked if Catholicism could accept gays and recognise positive aspects of same-sex couples. Roman Catholic gay rights groups around the world hailed the paper as a breakthrough, but Churchconservatives called it a betrayal of traditional family values. The document, prepared after a week of discussions at an assembly of 200 bishops on the family, said the Church should challenge itself to find “a fraternal space” for homosexuals without compromising Catholic doctrine on family and matrimony. While the text did not signal any change in the Church’s condemnation of homosexual acts or gay marriage, it used less judgmental and more compassionate language than that seen in Vatican statements prior to the 2013 election of Pope Francis. “Homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer the Christian community: are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a further space in our communities? Often they wish to encounter a Church that offers them a welcoming home,” said the document, known by its Latin name “relatio”. “Are our communities capable of proving that, accepting and valuing their sexual orientation, without compromising Catholic doctrine on the family and matrimony?” it asked. New Ways Ministry, a leading US Catholic gay rights group, called it a “major step forward”, praising it for being devoid of the “major gloom and doom and apocalyptic horror” that accompanied previous Vatican pronouncements on gay people. The London-based Catholic gay rights group QUEST called parts of it “a breakthrough in that they acknowledge that such unions have an intrinsic goodness and constitute a valuable contribution to wider society and the common good.” ‘Betrayal’ But John Smeaton, co-founder of the conservative group Voice of the Family, was less than happy with the Vatican’s apparent change in direction. “Those who are controlling the synod have betrayed Catholic parents worldwide,” he said, calling it “one of the worst official documents drafted in Church history”. The Vatican document will be the basis for discussion for the second and final week of the bishops’ assembly, also known as a synod. It will also serve for further reflection among Catholics around the world ahead of another, definitive synod next year. A number of participants at the closed-door gathering have said the Church should tone down its condemnatory language when referring to gay couples and avoid phrases such as “intrinsically disordered” when speaking of homosexuals. That was the phrase used by former Pope Benedict in a document written before his election, when he was still Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and head of the Vatican’s doctrinal department. The language and tone of Monday’s document, read to the assembly in the presence of Pope Francis, appeared to show that the advocates of a more inclusive tone towards gays and Catholics in so-called “irregular situations”—such as unmarried couples and those who have divorced—had prevailed. It said that the 1.2 billion-member Church should see the development of its position on homosexuals as “an important educational challenge” for the global institution. While the Church continued to affirm that same-sex unions “cannot be considered on the same footing as matrimony between man and woman”, it should recognise that there could be positive aspects to relationships in same-sex couples. “Without denying the moral problems connected to homosexual unions it has to be noted that there are cases in which mutual aid to the point of sacrifice constitutes a precious support in the life of the partners,” the document said. The paper also said there were “constructive elements” to heterosexual couples who were married only in civil services or who were living together, but stressed that Church marriages were “the ideal”. Pope Francis has said the Church must be more compassionate with homosexuals, saying last year, “If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge.” The Church teaches that while homosexual tendencies are not sinful, homosexual acts are.

EBOLA: UN employee dies of ebola in Germany.

A UN employee infected with the Ebola virus in west Africa has died after arriving in Germany last week for treatment, the hospital said on Tuesday. “The Ebola patient died during the night in the St Georg Clinic in Leipzig,” it said in a brief statement. “Despite intensive medical care and the best efforts by medical staff, the 56-year-old UN employee succumbed to the serious infection,” it added. Local health officials said last week that the patient was a Sudanese doctor who had arrived in Germany from Liberia on Thursday. Germany has previously treated two other Ebola patients infected in Sierra Leone — a Senegalese expert who was treated in Hamburg and released on October 4, and a Ugandan doctor now being treated in Frankfurt. The Ebola epidemic has killed more than 4,000 people this year, mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, and is spread through close contact with bodily fluids. The US and UN leaders on Monday called for “more robust” international efforts to tackle Ebola after medics in Liberia demanded danger money to treat patients in what officials termed the worst health crisis of modern times.

four chibok gilrs escaped from boko haram camp in cameroon!

Latest report has it that four of the abducted schoolgirls whisked away by the Boko Haram sect from Chibok months ago have reportedly escaped from the camp of the insurgents in Cameroun. This development is coming six months after over 200 of them were abducted from a school dormitory in Chibok, Borno State. Stephen Davis, the controversial British-Australian negotiator told The Times of London that the girls who are between the ages of 16 and 18 escaped from the insurgents’ den with the help of a young teenage prisoner, who also was one of those abducted by the terrorists. Davis said, the girls had to walk for about three weeks before they finally arrived at a village, looking tattered and traumatized. The Nigerian military authority is yet to comment on the development at the time of this report.
